I'll have to get around to listening to this soon. I have it but I've never heard it - I am not the biggest fan of late '69 personally. As Cliff noted, this era seems rather sloppy to me, even for '69.

But that's not really the reason I don't listen to it - like I said in the other thread, sloppy but adventurous works for me. For some reason I just don't find the sound of the band as compelling as the uniformly fantastic shows of Feb. - May/June. of the year. I can't quite put my finger on why exactly - the tempos are different, the sound of the band, I don't know really, but the X-factor just isn't there for me.

Take for example the 11/8 show - I do find it wonderful and unique, but I've always found it to be *somewhat* overrated, especially compared to the hot winter/spring shows. Crazy, I know. There are shows I do enjoy from the fall though; 11/2 (for the Dark Star especially), 12/28, and recently the brilliant 10/25 show clicked for me, so I'm going to give this one a chance...

agreed. it's the sound of the band. i think they were just in mid-transformation at the time, shifting to that 1970 sound, and they weren't as sure of themselves as they were earlier in the year. as a result their performances weren't as consistent and could be very sloppy at times as they tried to push themselves in a new direction. fast-forward to december of '69, and the playing improves once again. you can almost hear them get better with each show in december, and once they reach the latter part of the month, the shows are incredibly well-played.

let me know when you hear the segment i highlighted. i'd like to hear what you think.

the best part is the other one. the dark star doesn't start off very interesting and then gets extremely spacey (which i don't mind), but it picks up steam and overall is a fine effort (thanks to phil) that segues into uncle john's jam, which is a ton of fun to listen to. the ds reprise is fairly tight and stays within the song's structure. after the drum break, they EXPLODE into the other one, which is my favorite part. i remember liking the lovelight a good deal as well but i don't have notes on it so i can't say much about right now.

edit: the lovelight is excellent as well. very nice frenetic leads by jerry, and pig is very tolerable on this version.
